IV Pizza Pub sits in the heart of Isla Vista, steps from UC Santa Barbara — a slice-and-a-game institution where, on any given Saturday, the whole room is watching the same broadcast. The owners wanted to blanket the pub with screens of varying sizes so there's a great view from every booth, the counter, and the window seats, with audio to match and controls simple enough for any team member to run during a rush.
We installed seven Sony Mini LED televisions in a mix of 55-, 65-, and 75-inch sizes, positioned so every seat in the house has a clean sightline. Entertainment runs from Apple TV, with apps like YouTube TV handling live sports. At the owner's request, the system launched as a straightforward Apple TV setup — the simplest, most economical starting point — and we were upfront about the one trade-off it carries: when several screens show the same live event from independent streaming devices, they will not stay in sync.
Here's why. Every Apple TV — or any streaming box — is an island. Each one opens its own connection to the streaming service, fills its own buffer, and decodes the video on its own internal clock. No two devices pull data, buffer, and render at exactly the same rate; tiny differences in network timing, buffer depth, and processing all add up. Over the course of a live game those fractions of a second compound into visible drift — one screen shows the basket a beat or two before the screen beside it. In a packed pub where a guest can see four or five screens at once, and hears the bar erupt before the nearest TV catches up, that lag is glaring. Crucially, it's completely invisible when every TV is on something different; it only appears when the room is watching one thing together — which, on game day, is the entire point.
Several months later, the owners asked us to come back and make game day perfect. The right tool for that is Crestron DM NVX, a professional AV-over-IP distribution system. Instead of a separate streamer behind every television, a single source is encoded once by a Crestron NVX E20 encoder and sent across the network as one stream. Each of the seven displays has a matching NVX D20 decoder that receives that identical feed. Because every screen is driven from the same encoded source and the decoders share a common, frame-synchronized clock, all seven televisions paint the exact same frame at the exact same instant. The drift is gone — true, frame-for-frame sync, no matter how fast the action moves. We deployed seven E20 encoders and seven D20 decoders, giving the pub a full, flexible video matrix.
NVX is the right architecture for a venue like this for several reasons. It rides the standard network you already have — no bulky HDMI matrix switcher and no long, fragile HDMI runs across the building. Any source can be routed to any screen, or to every screen at once, with a single touch. It carries full 4K HDR with low latency, and it scales effortlessly: adding a screen is as simple as adding a decoder. In short, NVX turns seven independent televisions into one coordinated video system — exactly what a sports bar needs when the whole room is locked onto the same play. Because it layered cleanly over the existing installation, the upgrade was an enhancement rather than a tear-out: the Sony displays and Apple TV sources stayed in place, and the experience simply leveled up.
Music throughout the pub runs on Crestron NAX, a networked audio platform that distributes sound across the room over the same network — so there's always the right energy between plays and between games, independent of what's on the screens.
Everything is run from a single iPad running Crestron. One button powers the entire system on or off at open and close, and the interface is deliberately simple and locked down — any employee can put the game on every screen, choose sources, and adjust volume without training, and without being able to misconfigure anything. It's the smallest possible learning curve for the staff, in service of the best possible experience for guests. Underpinning it all is a UniFi network for reliable, segmented performance, with UniFi Protect providing ten cameras for security and coverage throughout the pub.
